This analysis is based on data collected in March 2024, featuring the top 20 automotive brands as identified in Brand Finance’s Automotive Industry Report (2024). In contrast to our previous Digital Due Diligence (DDD) analysis, which used the 2022 rankings, the 2024 report reveals notable changes, with Land Rover and Haval exiting the list, and GMC and KIA taking their place.

Social Media Landscape

Mercedes-Benz leads the automotive industry in social media presence, boasting the highest follower count, followed by BMW with a gap of 3 million.

Over the past year, social media followers across platforms grew by an average of 9.46%, with Instagram seeing the largest numerical increase of 20 million new users, while TikTok experienced the highest growth rate at 88.43%.

Ferrari dominates TikTok and has the most combined followers on video platforms, although it ranks only fifth on YouTube behind Tesla, Ford, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW. BYD nearly doubled its video platform followers, indicating a stronger focus on video content.

Webpage and organic performance

The average desktop performance score dropped by 16.18% from 69 to 58 points compared to 2023, while mobile performance saw a modest 5.18% increase, rising to 35 points.

SEO scores for both mobile and desktop improved by an average of 4.46% year-over-year, though 13 brands, including Chevrolet, experienced declines in desktop performance.

BYD stood out with the largest increase in authority score, reflecting growing digital influence, and also led in user experience.

Ford saw the highest organic keyword growth, adding 1.4 million, while Audi faced challenges, losing both keywords and visibility.

Digital brand strength

In 2023, Hyundai, Toyota, Kia, and BMW emerged as the most impactful automotive brands, while Audi, Lexus, and Mercedes-Benz maintained consistent interest over the last two decades.

BYD and Tesla have experienced significant growth over the past decade, with BYD achieving a 26.87% CAGR and Tesla 15.87%, though BYD still trails in monthly search volume despite a 533.81% surge.

Overall, the top 20 automotive brands have grown in popularity by 7.69% year-over-year, with Toyota and Tesla leading in search volume.
